My wife & I had our date afternoon (finally)! We saw Emerald Fennell's adaptation of Emily Brontë's classic tragic romance tale, "Wuthering Heights"! This one has award nominated stars, Margot Robbie & Jacob Elordi as the doomed, star crossed lovers: Catherine & Heathcliff. I have never read the book, so I cannot compare any film version to the legendary novel.
Apparently, there's been 30 plus adaptations of the story between TV & movies! Putting the focus on Fennell's adaptation though, I didn't know what to expect. We both enjoyed her dazzling debut, "Promising Young Woman". I didn't bother with "Saltburn", but my wife saw it and said it was "disgusting"! Ha! We were both pleasantly surprised that it was actually somewhat enjoyable, if not a bit over the top.
First off, the cinematography was breathtakingly brilliant! Production focused on capturing the rugged, "wily, windy" atmosphere of the Northern locales of England while utilizing major studio facilities in the South.
The performances were not too bad. Jacob Elordi keeps proving that he's a force to be reckoned with (despite the issues with his accent) and Margot Robbie isn't too bad I suppose, but I expected more from her as she has certainly shined brighter in other roles. The real scene stealer is British character actor, Martin Clunes who plays Cathy's tragic father.
I wanted to like it more I suppose. Don't get me wrong it's not bad and it's an OK one time watch but I don't think anyone will ever beat the masterful 1939 version (despite the fact it shaves off half of the novel!). If you're a fan of the 1939 film or the book, it's certainly worth the watch!
